Alcohol Policy
The Board of Higher Education passed an alcohol policy in October, 1997 and called on campus Boards of Trustees to adopt it by a formal vote. Excerpts below highlight Massachusetts Board of Higher Education Campus Alcohol Policy.
· It is the policy of the Board of Higher Education that no person shall give, sell, deliver or have in their possession any alcoholic beverage in any building, including residence halls, owned or operated by an institution within the system of public higher education or on any premises used for higher education purposes and under the control of a board of trustees of a public higher education institution.
· The Board of Higher Education calls on all campuses to provide effective alcohol education programs for all students, especially first-year students, and to take the following steps to eliminate underage consumption of alcoholic beverages and curb binge drinking.
· In October, 1998, amended alcohol policy to require suspension of students for third offense underage possession or consumption of any alcoholic beverage following progressive discipline for the first two offenses.
· In May 1999, amended alcohol policy by adding the requirement consistent with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act/Buckley Amendment, that campuses notify the parents or legal guardians of students under 21 years of age each time they have been determined to be in violation of campus alcohol policy.
